Position: Installation Assistant
Location: Outer Space, Magandjin (Brisbane)
Start Date: Week commencing 16 March 2026
Reports to: Installation Technician & Exhibitions Officer
Employment Type: Casual contract
Remuneration: $34 per hour (exclusive of superannuation)
Commitment: 2 days per 6 week exhibition rotation for installation periods (hours/dates vary depending on exhibition schedule and are subject to change)

Position Overview
We are seeking a highly organised and passionate person to support the Lead Installation Technician and Exhibitions Officer in the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions. As the Install Assistant, you will be involved in various aspects of exhibition preparation, including technical support in hanging and displaying a wide variety of mediums, audio-visual (AV) setup, fabrication of mounts and the use of power tools. As well as developing skills in safe art-handling methods.
This position will allow you to continue developing professional skills in exhibition installation, demount, and preparation while working in a collaborative, creative environment. You will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals and gain more insight into the processes behind mounting and installing contemporary art exhibitions.

Key Responsibilities
Assist the Installation Technician and Exhibitions Officer with day-to-day exhibition installations and deinstallations.
Practice professional exhibition installation and demount skills, including:
Execute complex installations of differing mediums and scale, suspended and multi-component artworks.
Perform precise layouts using laser levels and measuring systems.
Install and troubleshoot AV projects, projectors, monitors, media players, and cable management systems, ensuring concealment of technical components.
Execute ceiling-mounted and overhead installations using Unistrut systems.
Setup and adjust track lighting utilising Casambi.
Fabricate and modify custom mounts, brackets and display supports.
Troubleshoot installation challenges in real time, adapting rigging strategies while maintaining safe artwork standards.
Support the preparation and setup of gallery spaces, ensuring exhibitions are installed to the highest standards.
Collaborate with team members to ensure the smooth running of installations and deinstallations.
Attend team meetings and contribute ideas to exhibition processes and planning.
Availability:
The Install Assistant must be available for installation and de-install periods in the 2026 exhibition calendar.

Skills and Experience:
Basic installation experience is required. We are seeking a candidate who not only brings foundational install knowledge but also demonstrates a strong commitment to building a career in exhibition installation. A genuine passion for art, exhibitions, and hands-on work with artworks is essential, along with a clear desire to expand technical skills, deepen installation expertise, and grow within a dedicated install-focused role.
AV knowledge and experience is highly desired.
Special Requirements/ Physical Demands:
Ability to lift and carry heavy and/or awkward loads following safety procedures.
Climb ladders and work at heights above ground level.
Have responsibility for Health & Safety in exhibition spaces.
Follow established safe working practices when carrying out duties.
Desirable Qualities:
Strong communication skills; clearly conveys instructions, listens actively, and coordinates with colleagues to ensure smooth, safe, and accurate installation and handling of artworks.
Good attention to detail; handles tasks thoughtfully, ensuring artworks and installations are treated with care, patience and presented accurately.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Enthusiasm to learn and develop new practical skills
Interest in contemporary art and artist-led spaces
An interest in the technical side of exhibitions and installations
Remains calm under pressure, working effectively within tight installation schedules.
